Nomads Under 19s go through to the quarter final of the Welsh Youth Cup

Fri, 30th November, 2012 2:11pm

Last night our youth side beat Rhyl by four goals to two at the Deeside Stadium.

In a tough fixture, as always against a strong Rhyl side, Nomads failed to take advantage of the superior possession and squandered a number of first half chances. But Nomads did go into the break one nil up, thanks to Jamie Wynne’s near post header scored from a corner on 20 minutes.

After the break, Rhyl levelled the scores to one all on 59 minutes with James Stead’s brilliant 30 yard pile driver, before 16 year old Nomads "man of the match" Aaron Williams, scored with neat low shot after 61 minutes to put Nomads two one up. 10 minutes later, Shaun Tinsley made it three for Nomads with a great volley from the edge of the area before Josh Williams made it four with a good header in the 86th minute.

Rhyl scored a late penalty, to end the game with a four two victory to Nomads.

The Nomads secretary Trevor Green, commented: “Great refereeing by young Ashley Jones who is going to be a big name on the officiating circle, if he keeps on developing like this.”

Nomads join Swansea City (who beat Port Talbot 4-2 in their 3rd round game), in the quarter final stage draw, as the biggest youth competition in Wales the goes national. Most of the postoned 3rd round games are due to be played this weekend, so when the quarter-final draw is made by Chris Coleman next Tuesday, the situation should become much clearer.

The under 19s have made a great start to the season and currently top the Welsh Premier Youth League with a 100% record, as well as still being in both the NEWFA Under 19 cup and the FAW Youth cup competitions.

There is a long way to go in the season and lots of work needs to be done with things to improve on, but despite a below-par performance last night, Nomads got the all-important result.
