From 1987, Aberystwyth Town played in the Welsh League (South) and were runners-up 3 times, before becoming founder members of the League of Wales in 1992. They achieved 3rd place in their first season and it remains their best ever WPL position. Town are one of only three teams that have taken part in each season of the Welsh Premier League.
Aberystwyth made a miserable start to this Welsh Premier League season. After their first 5 games they only had 2 points and were bottom of the league, and then they came to Deeside on Sept 15th and beat Nomads 2-1.
Since then, Aberystwyth’s form has improved considerably and they have taken 10 points from their last 6 games. Of their 7 home games, they have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 3, but they will no doubt be full of confidence when they face Nomads on Saturday in this live S4C clash, after twice coming from behind in a fine 4-2 victory at Port Talbot last weekend.
Nomads also came from behind to record a thoroughly deserved 2-1 home victory over Newtown last Friday, to make it back-to-back Welsh Premier League wins for the first time since September. So confidence is also high in the Nomads squad.
Manager McGregor expressed his delight with Nomads Academy graduates, 17 year old Rhys Healey and 18 year old Ryan Edwards. Healey, who might not have been a a regular starter had Gary O’Toole remained on Deeside, scored his ninth league goal of the season against Newtown, making it 11 in all competitions, and Ryan Edwards won a 2nd successive Man of the Match award for another assured performance in difficult conditions.
Macca said: “Rhys has taken his chance. At the minute he is playing without any pressure and I don’t think he would have believed anyone, if they had told him he would have 9 goals this season already.”
Apart from midfielder Michael Thompson, who came off with a calf injury against the Robins and was replaced by Ricky Evans, Nomads are likely to start with an unchanged line-up against Aberystwyth.
