The Nomads vs Stabæk

Nomads to face Stabæk in historic first European tie

Date Published: Tuesday, 21st June, 2016 - 12:40pm

Monday 20th June saw delegates from The Nomads travel to UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland to discover our first ever competitive European opposition.

The Nomads' first ever competitive European match will be against Norwegian opponents, Stabæk Fotball from Bærum. Stabæk have a good European pedigree having first entered the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1997. Since then, they have gone on to take part in the UEFA Cup, UEFA Champions' League and UEFA Europa League with their last European adventure seeing them knocked out of the first qualifying round by Finnish side JJK Jyväskylä 4-3 on aggregate in the 2012-13 season.

Known as The Blue Ones, the side from Bærum are currently managed by former Scotland international, Billy McKinlay, who joined the side in November 2015 having assisted David Moyes for little over a year at Spanish club, Real Sociedad. The side currently sit 15th in the Norwegian Tippeligaen having won just three of their opening 13 games.

The Nomads will be playing their home European ties at Rhyl's Belle Vue Stadium due to UEFA Stadium regulations, with our opponents facing the same relocation issue, as they will be playing their home ties at the Fredrikstad Stadion, approximately 75 miles away from their usual home at the Nadderud Stadion.

Tickets for The Nomads home tie will be priced at £10 for general admission and £/5 for concessions and under 16's.

Following the draw, Andy Morrison was interviewed at UEFA Headquarters and he said "They're not ripping it up this year in their league with a new manager coming in at the start of their season, so it may be a good time to play them."

Morrison continued; "It's really exciting times and everybody should be excited by the prospect... they say when you get in these draws you don't want to get a Scandanavian team because they are in their season, they're in full flow, they're fit, but it's a great opportunity for us to go and make a mark in this league." The first leg of the tie will be played on Thursday, June 30th at Rhyl with a 7:15pm kick off time while the second leg will be played on Norway on Thursday, July 7th with a 7:00pm kick off.
