While the pace of the game itself might be slowing, The Nomads have seen their Walking Football initiative gather momentum since it's launch in November 2016.
Walking football is the beautiful game without running and is a game that more closely resembles a five-a-side game as opposed to an 11-a-side game. It was first played in 2011 by the Chesterfield FC Community Trust, but it was a 2014 Barclays TV advertising campaign that featured a team taking part in walking football that helped the initiative take off.
It was invented to inspire men over 50 to get more exercise and counter social isolation, and now The Nomads have joined in with the launch of their Walking Football sessions. Every Tuesday between 1:45pm and 2:45pm The Nomads host a session at Deeside Leisure Centre in partnership with the Flintshire National Exercise Referral Scheme which has seen a regular following of 20 players taking part each week. The sessions are split into two sections, a competitive and non-competitive half each, giving everyone attending what they are looking for to enjoy the sessions.
Head of Quay in the Community, Lee Breeze said "We are delighted that our walking football programme has taken off so well. The partnership with NERS is such a great feather in the cap for both the players and the Quay in the Community initiative. To combine their knowledge and expertise with our know-how on coaching and delivering sessions results in high quality sessions for everyone to enjoy. It is just the start of the walking football programme as we aim to grow and develop the sessions and partnership with NERS."
The Nomads' Quay in the Community Walking Football sessions take place every Tuesday afternoon between 1:45pm and 2:45pm at Deeside Leisure Centre. Players of all abilities are welcome to attend with the first session being completely free.
