Nomads to face Soligorsk in Europa League

Connah's Quay Nomads can today confirm that we will be facing Belarusian side, Shakhtyor Soligorsk in the UEFA Europa League First Qualifying Round.

The draw took place earlier today at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, and as a result, The Nomads will now face Shakhtyor Soligorsk. The draw means that the home leg will take place at Rhyl's Belle Vue Stadium on Thursday 12th July with the return leg taking place at the 4,200 seater Stroitel Stadium the following Thursday on the 19th.

The team, known as The Miners are based around a two hour journey from the Belarusian capital of Minsk and finished the 2017 campaign third in the Belarusian Premier League. Shakytor first played in the UEFA Cup Qualifying Rounds in 2001 where they lost out to CSKA Sofia 5-2 on aggregate. In total, they have played 40 European ties through the Europa League, Champions' League and Intertoto Cup. They have never progressed hrough to the group stages of any UEFA Competition, with their best performance coming in the 2014-15 competition when they reached the Play Off phase having defeated Derry City and Zulte Waregem in the Second and Third Qualifying Rounds before losing out 3-0 to PSV Eindhoven in the eventual playoff.

The side currently sit fourth in the Belarusian Premier League having picked up seven victories and three draws from their 12 games so far, sitting behind BATE, Dinamo Minsk and FC Vitebsk, and will have to face BATE, Smolevichi STI and Minsk in the League before facing The Nomads in North Wales.

On the draw, Andy Morrison said "We come up against an in-form Shakhtyor Soligorsk who are in the middle of their season, so there is no doubt that it will be a real challenge. We have shown over the last two campaigns that we are more than capable of getting big results against very good teams."

Should The Nomads progress to the Second Qualifying Round, we will face the winner of Lech Poznan (Poland) and Gandzasar Kapan (Armenia).
