Somalia come calling for Sharif

Connah’s Quay Nomads would like to congratulate midfielder Abdi Sharif on his international call-up to Somalia for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

24-year-old Sharif, who joined the Nomads in July, will be a part of the matchday squad for Somalia’s qualifiers against Guinea and Uganda on Friday, 5 September and Monday, 8 September with the training camp starting on Thursday, 28 August.

Sharif has impressed in the early stages of his Nomads career so far, and he has also performed to a high standard at Liverpool, Wigan Athletic and Aberystwyth Town.

During his time at Wigan, Sharif made history as the first Somali player to feature in an EFL Championship fixture, coming on as a substitute in a goalless draw with Rotherham United in May 2023.

? This will be Sharif’s second international call up to Somalia having played for his country in an international friendly against Niger in October 2023.

On his selection, John Disney commented; “Everyone at the club is delighted for Abdi getting his first international call up in two years - it’s great to hear that the TV coverage from Sundays game on Sgorio against Colwyn Bay was the game the national team manager watched and selected him from.

Abdi has been brilliant since he signed in pre-season and someone that a lot of people have constantly asked myself and members of the staff about ever since his arrival, his qualities in and out of possession are clear for everyone to see but more so his versatility, availability and his knowledge of the game is something that’s really impressed me.

I am sure that this is a very proud moment for Abdi and his family and everyone at Connahs Quay Nomads shares that pride for himself and wishes himself and Somalia a very positive and injury free camp for the World Cup Qualifiers.”

Everyone at Connah’s Quay Nomads wishes Abdi a safe journey to Africa and the best of luck in his fixtures!
