Wales Meet Kosovo: The Wider Significance Beyond A UEFA Tie

When Connah’s Quay Nomads face Kosovo’s FC Ballkani in the UEFA Conference League on Wednesday, 8 July, our immediate objective will be to secure victory.

There is, however, greater significance beyond the result, not only for the two clubs but also for the nations they represent in Wales and Kosovo.

This will not be the Nomads’ first meeting with Kosovan opposition, having previously faced FC Prishtina in the inaugural UEFA Conference League in 2021/22.

Five years on, another tie against a club from Kosovo provides an opportunity to revisit the wider significance of UEFA competition for nations such as Wales and Kosovo.

Every result in UEFA competition affects a country’s UEFA coefficient ranking, so with Wales and Kosovo currently occupying 54th and 35th respectively in that table, every point earned on the European stage carries extremely high value.

UEFA coefficient points can only be earned through results on the pitch.

Across the two legs of our UEFA Conference League First Qualifying Round tie against Ballkani, 1 point will be awarded to the winner of a leg, while each nation would receive 0.5 points for a draw.

The total points accumulated by all clubs from that nation are added together, then divided by the total number of teams that represented that nation in Europe that season.

The nation's final ranking is calculated by taking the sum of these averages over the last five consecutive seasons.

As Connah’s Quay Nomads have become one of Wales’ most consistent representatives in UEFA competition over the past decade, every victory and draw earned on the European stage has contributed towards the country’s UEFA coefficient.

Alongside the efforts of fellow Cymru Premier clubs, those results have helped Wales retain four European qualification places, creating opportunities for more clubs across the Welsh football pyramid to experience UEFA competition.

Ballkani have also been instrumental in improving their country’s UEFA coefficient ranking in recent years. Kosovo only joined UEFA in 2016, but just like the Nomads, they have won league titles, domestic cups and achieved multiple top three finishes in their league.

In many ways, Wednesday’s tie brings together two clubs that have helped shape the European stories of their respective nations. While the immediate aim is progression to the second qualifying round, the result will also contribute to the wider ambitions of Welsh and Kosovan football.

The importance of UEFA competition extends beyond coefficient points alone.

Participation in UEFA competitions brings significant financial rewards through solidarity and prize payments, providing clubs with valuable income that can be reinvested into playing squads, facilities and the continued development of the club.

In a league where financial margins are often tight, such as the Novira Cymru Premier, those opportunities can make a meaningful difference. Every European campaign not only raises the profile of the club, but also strengthens its foundations for the seasons ahead.

It is another reason why every UEFA coefficient point matters. Strong performances from Welsh clubs help protect the country’s European allocation, giving more clubs the chance to benefit from competing in UEFA competition and helping to strengthen the Novira Cymru Premier as a whole.

We would love to see as many supporters as possible at the Nomads’ UEFA Conference League First Qualifying Round first leg at Llanellian Road on Wednesday.

We want you to get behind our lads as they look to take a positive step in this tie.

Your support can make a real difference on nights like these, where small margins can define big moments for the club and for Welsh football.
