Nomads v Glantraeth. Tues 24th July. ko 7.30pm

Glantraeth Football Club formed in 1984 with its base on land adjacent to the Glantraeth Restaurant made available by landowner Mr Iolo Owen and the club entered Division 2 of the Anglesey League, League and Cup successes followed so rapidly, that after promotions through the Anglesey and Gwynedd leagues, Glantraeth became Welsh Alliance Champions in season1996/97.

For promotion to the Cymru Alliance, a stand had to be built, alterations made to the changing rooms and a drainage system needed, so the work was put in by the small band of dedicated committee members to ensure promotion was rubber stamped at the Cymru Alliance A.G.M. Glantraeths’ most successful season was in 2005/06, being the first Anglesey based club to do the Double, winning the Cymru Alliance Championship and the Cymru Alliance League Challenge Cup. The club could not be promoted to the WPL, as the ground at Cae Trefdraeth did not meet the higher league requirements.

In the summer of 2009, the club made the shock decision to resign from the Cymru Alliance and withdraw from playing football for a season, but time was not wasted. During the year absence from football, work carried out on the ground included concrete hard standing, new spectator barriers, a new toilet block and the ground was fenced off from surrounding farmland. Readmitted to the Gwynedd League for 2010-11 season, Glantraeth promptly gained promotion back to the Welsh Alliance and also won four cup finals,.

Last season Glantraeth were promoted to the Welsh Alliance division one as division two Champions and also won the League Cup against Llanberis. They opened their pre-season programme on the 14th July with a 4-0 win at Gaerwen, then on 17th they won 4-0 against Holyhead Town and finally last Saturday, they won 5-2 at Rhydymwyns Vicarage Road ground. After 3 good wins, I expect Glantraeth to come to Deeside, well organised and confident in their ability to take their game to us. They certainly have nothing to lose and Nomads need to take care not to under-estimate them.

Nomads’ manager Mark McGregor doesn't like losing and with the lessons to be learned from our first pre season defeat at Stockport Sports last Saturday, urging our Lads to return to winning ways will be one of his priorities. Trying out new things and rotating the squad to ensure all the players continue to improve fitness levels, is what these pre season games are for, but Macca knows that the winning habit also breeds confidence. Nomads certainly won’t be underestimating the threat that Glantraeth could pose.

Bring your friends and family down to Deeside to support the lads, as they very much appreciate all of your support.
