Connah's Quay Nomads vs Newtown AFC
JD Cymru Premier
Saturday 29th November 2008 | 2:30pm
Deeside Stadium, Connah's Quay | Attendance: 0
A topsy-turvy affair saw Newtown open-up a two-goal lead inside the first four minutes, but they needed a late penalty to share the spoils at a fog-shrouded Deeside Stadium.
Caught cold in the Robin's first attack, Nomads gave Mark Griffiths room to fire home inside the first 20 seconds.
And worse was to follow when two defenders stood back to allow Gavin Cadwallader a second goal only four minutes into the match. But the home side showed their mettle and came back strongly to equalise. On 14 minutes Peter Doran, put through by Aden Shannon, was able to fire past Dave Jones, his shot striking an upright on its way into the net.
Then ten minutes later, a great right-wing run by Adam Dickinson was followed by a cross into the danger area and Doran headed home his second goal.
Newtown were on the back foot for much of the final two thirds of the game, rarely being allowed out of their own half after the break when Nomads came close on several occasions.
Former Nomads centre-back Danny Jellicoe led Newtown by example keeping the home strikers at bay until Dickinson burst through to give Quay the lead with only 11 minutes remaining.
However, the Robins would not give up and, as the fog thickened, they launched one last attack and were awarded a penalty kick when a hopeful shot struck Lee Bamber's arm and Craig Williams made no mistake from the spot.
