Goals in each half from Tommy Holmes and Jamie Wood ensured The New Saints ended-up comfortable winners on Deeside.

They beat Connah's Quay 2-0 to close the gap on leaders Rhyl and Llanelli, recording their fourth success of the campaign against the Nomads.

Holmes sent a looping header over keeper Terry McCormick in the 23rd-minute from Wood's pinpoint right-wing cross to deservedly put the Saints in front.

But they survived a scare just before half-time when Steve Evans was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box and it took a superb save from keeper Paul Harrison to keep out Aden Shannon's penalty.

The Saints had earlier had a good shout for handball turned down by referee Andy Harms, while McCormick produced a fine save to keep out Scott Ruscoe's shot from the edge of the box.

The keeper also did well to tip-over a header from Alex Darlington, who produced an industrious display on his return from suspension and produced the flicked header which put Wood in the clear to notch his goal after 65 minutes.

Harrison saved at his near post from Danny Pinch in a rare Nomads attack, but McCormick made the stop of the night from sub Craig Williams' overhead kick following Wood's cross.
