Russell featured for Salford City before joining Rhyl in January 2010. Became the club captain and helped the Lilywhites to the Cymru Alliance title in 2012/13. He joined Nantwich Town during the summer before joining The Nomads in January 2014.

After a successful spell at the club, captaining the side on a number of ocassions, Russell left the club in April 2014, heading to Australia, joining Tasmanian Premier League side Hobart FC.

Courtney rejoined The Nomads in January 2015 upon his return from Australia, however found first team opportunities limited and left the Club in May 2015.
