Maxwell spent a six-month loan spell at The Nomads during the 2008-09 season, making 20 appearances in all competitions, before being called back by Wrexham in January 2009. Maxwell made his debut for The Nomads in a 2-1 victory over Haverfordwest County in August 2008 before making his final appearance for the Club in a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Porthmadog in December 2008.

Maxwell went on to play for Fleetwood Town, Wrexham, Cambridge United and Preston North End. During his time at Wrexham, Maxwell picked up the FA Trophy with a match-winning performance at Wembley as The Dragons defeated Grimsby Town on penalties with Maxwell only conceding one of Grimsby's four spot kicks.

In May 2016, it was announced that Maxwell would join the Welsh International team as they prepared for Euro 2016.
